android application beginner design

I'm planning on developing an application for Android devices and as I'm completely new to this technology, I'm wondering if some of you could put me on this right track.

Here is what I want to do:

A simple application with user interface displaying images, lists, combo and other standard controls. A local database with a few thousands records, accessed only in read-only No internet connection required

After a few searches on the web, I'm thinking of a java application with a SQLite DB.

What do you guys think? Is it a good idea? Do you have better?
