Which database solution suits a highly populated static research database? [on hold]

I have a research database that is mostly static (it will only get populated one time), which should be used for pulling out statistics, removing erroneous data etc. My "problem" is that it is fairly big - we are talking about up to a total of >600 million entries over 4 different tables, which in term has around 8-10 columns. Right now I am planning to use sqlite for the simplicity, but I am interested in if there are any far superiour solutions for this use.
