.Net Where is the Accepted Standard place to save Settings?

.Net and indeed Visual Studio makes saving application and User settings a breeze through the Properties.Settings.Default provider. However, if the program is also using an .mdf database the choice of where to save the settings is not so clear - especially if there are a lot of settings.

Is there a standard, accepted practice for where to save the app and user settings in this scenario?
