How to use SQLiteDbHelper in background properly in Android?

I am learning to use SQLite in Android. I have learnt that multiple operations in one connection is thread-safe so I use singleton pattern. But now I am confusing about reading and writing database in background. Which one should I choose, AsyncTask, Service or Handler? And why should i choose it?
