Android database managing alternatives

I'm diving again into SQLite databases, and so into SQLiteOpenHelper and DAO.

I'm feeling unsatisfied about this : I can't find any native method to create a table and changing the architecture of the whole is very challenging.

I heard there were alternative to SQL but i'm lost in numbers.

Else, would anyone recommand a good library that handle database managing ?

(This could sounds opinion-based, but is not. I'm looking for alternative of what I think is not natively handled well enough)
