What are the advantages of introducing a Remotedatabasehelper.java class into an application

This question is related to android. For an offline database "Databasehelper.java" I think I know some advantages being:

1. Manage database creation and version management
2. Validate data before it is wrote to the database
3. Automatic Upgrade

But for an online helper I am unsure. Any help would be appreciated, Simon
