sqlite encryption on java applet

I'm building an encrypted chat system (a java applet). I'm planning to include a database (sqlite)

I'd like to know if there's any way of encrypting the data in sqlite.

I've googled around a bit and everything that comes up is encryption with android but I'm not using android.

Any ideas?
