Insert a blob in an sqlite database with Javascript

I am using Cordova and the Camera plugin to get a picture. The image is returned as a base64. I am converting it to byteArray to save on its size (is this correct?). Now I am confused how to insert and then retrieve the image in an SQLite database with javascript. Also shall the SQLite column be defined as BLOB or String. Does it really make a difference?
